A Small Wonder

I was looking for a budget DAC/Amp that supports PCM768 to hit 1 Million Taps with HQPlayer.

Below is my audio chain,

PC > DSD/FLAC > HQPlayer 4 Desktop (Adaptive Gain, sinc-Mx Filter, LNS15 Shaper, PCM384) > iFi iSilencer+ > Encore mDSD > HiFiMAN HE400i ver. 2020 (75 dB SPL, Sonarworks Reference 4 EQ)

I replaced my aging Encore mDSD DAC/Amp which is an ESS 9010K2M-based USB DAC/Amp with Audirect Atom 2 and changed the sampling rate to PCM768 and then volume matched it to 75 dB SPL.

Right away I can able to sense an increase in the depth and soundstage in all my music. I can say the tonality of Atom 2 is neutral compared to Encore mDSD which has a thicker sound. Along with width, it adds height and a little bit of z-axis, which I never noticed before.

The imaging also improved, I can able to pinpoint instruments in space, and also no smearing is happening. I can sense the layers in the mix even during busy passages.

There’s also an increase in low-end note clarity and overall resolution.

I am quite happy with my purchase. It has enough power to drive my fairly efficient planar headphones.

It would be nice if a Lightning Adapter was also included in the package and also some software control to change the internal DAC filters, Gain Stages, etc.
